Point Loma Real Estate, San Diego, CA

The coastal community of Point Loma is situated in Central San Diego County, California. A well-developed community, Point Loma is a peninsula flanked by the Pacific Ocean on the west and the sparkling San Diego Bay on the east. Towards the north lie the San Diego River and the communities of Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach. As the name suggests, ('Loma’, means hill in Spanish), most of the terrain is comprised of rolling hills covered with lush greenery set against the backdrop of the sparkling blue waters.

The temperature in Point Loma averages between 70 and 85 degrees and seldom drops down below 68 in the winter. With such excellent weather and vast shoreline available, there are plenty of opportunities for water sports and outdoor entertainment. Be it fishing off the pier, surfing on the waves, or sailing in the placid blue waters of the San Diego Bay, locals and tourists have plenty of entertainment and fun in this idyllic community.

The Point Loma peninsula is one of the most preferred tourist destinations amid the beach communities of San Diego. A favorite pastime of locals is whale watching. Tourists and residents throng to catch sightings of migrating gray whales especially during the winter. Another popular destination is the 68-acre Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. This park offers many thrills such as exploring sea caves, and is a great place to watch spectacular sunsets.  Other leisure activities include boating, kayaking, hiking, biking, rollerblading and sunbathing.

It is at Point Loma that the Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo first set foot upon in 1542 when he sailed up the coast from Mexico and discovered California. Named after this Portuguese explorer, the Cabrillo National Monument and Park is a popular tourist attraction. This park and monument offers hiking trails on the bayside offering a close look into nature with memorable sightings of mammals, small reptiles, plants, and migratory birds. The 150-year old Point Loma Light House, is part of the monument, and has historic importance of having guided ships passing through the Bay for more than 40 years. Visitors are also drawn to the numerous tide pools at the base of the cliffs that offer rare glimpses of the rich marine life of the region. Another attraction is the Navy's submarine base located in Point Loma.

What makes Point Loma real estate so unique is the enticing natural setting that pervades the whole community. Point Loma residents live the dream of a coastal lifestyle amidst urban amenities. The seaside living, thriving economy and lovely landscape makes Point Loma real estate very appealing. From single-family homes that have a median price of $971,250 (July 2007) to magnificent, multi-million dollar mansions, Point Loma real estate spreads over the hilly topography presenting spectacular views of the ocean, bay and canyon.  The natural scenery and the breathtaking location of homes make Point Loma real estate highly desired.

According to 2000 Census, Point Loma real estate consists of 7,114 households.  Homes are of varied architectural designs from Mediterranean to Spanish style. Besides fabulous homes on the mountain slopes, one can find several residential and commercial complexes that have been converted from military bases. A third of Point Loma real estate consists of apartments and condos.

Winding roads, upscale homes and waterfront properties, Point Loma real estate has something for everyone. The prime locations of Point Loma real estate include upscale neighborhoods such as Silver Gate and La Playa. The unique location of this coastal town makes it highly desirable. To the east is the unbelievable skyline view of Downtown San Diego, the Cuyamaca Mountains and the San Diego Bay, towards the west is the aquamarine blue ocean, while towards the South lies Mexico.

Point Loma real estate includes Liberty Station, an urban village, which has been transformed from a former Naval Training Center. This mixed use development ads a sizeable portion of waterfront properties to the already impressive MLS listings of Point Loma real estate. Complete with posh homes and condos, offices, shopping centers, restaurants, schools, cultural facilities, parks and open space, Liberty Station is a popular destination for those looking for Point Loma properties.

If you are considering buying a home, condo, or any other real estate in Point Loma, be sure to seek out the services of a Point Loma Realtor who can advise you about local market conditions and help you find and buy or your dream home.
